Published by Doug Bassett | February 25, 2013On Friday, Microsoft suffered a 9 HOUR outage that affected Microsoft Azure and Xbox Live. This brought down a variety of services. Who was a culprit? It was an expired SSL digital certificate.
Digital certificates are used to create an encrypted communications path. You use these any time you type HTTPS:// as opposed to HTTP://. The certificates help with identifying the server and are managed by a CA. These certificates have a defined life time and, like a driver’s license, expire.
